Some commentators have described Brauer as a "solid, semi-friendly looking font" that balances the neutrality of Helvetica with a more approachable character.

The story of Brauer Neue begins with its predecessor, , designed by Pierre Pané-Farré. The font was inspired by the aesthetics of mid-20th-century industrial signage and European engineering diagrams. It wasn’t meant to be flashy; it was meant to be legible and functional .
